"For
modern-day ink slingers and aficionados, the literary festival is
the way to support inventive language and untried styles. One of
the largest literary organizations in North Texas is WordSpace -- they've
presented more than 200 events in the last decade and have brought
talents to town such as National Public Radio commentator and writer
Andrei Codrescu and poets Robert Creeley and Gerald Burns."
The Dallas Observer 2005
WordSpace presents many events each year including these continuing programs:
Texas Unbound Literary Festival
Held every summer on three consecutive weekends (Thurs-Sun), the
festival takes place at the Undermain
Theatre in Dallas's Deep Ellum (3200 Main Street). This acclaimed
event presents Dallas's best writers, critics and performers in
a wide variety of disciplines. Recent festival evenings were devoted
to cabaret performance, staged play readings, fiction readings,
poetry, and Dallas's blues history.
Paperbacks Plus Reading Series
Held in partnership with our friends at Paperbacks
Plus bookstore (6115 LaVista), this series features exciting
new voices on the Dallas' literary scene. Donations are suggested.
All talks are on Sunday evenings and begin at 7p.m.
The
Dallas Institute for the Humanities and Culture Series website
This series features discussions of the history of literary writing in Dallas and selected author events. All events are $5.00 and take place Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. at 2719 Routh Street in Dallas's Uptown area.
Writing Workshop
WordSpace's most recent educational program was presented by board members Ben Fountain and David Searcy. This intensive one-day workshop focused on writing and selling fiction. Students submitted manuscripts up to twenty pages in length for reading/comment by instructors, and all manuscripts were discussed and analyzed in class. Instructors led discussions on the business of fiction from getting an agent to selling books. Limited to a small amount of students, the class was so popular it had a waiting list.

Deck
Twice a year, WordSpace seeks out new voices at Texas universities
and invites these talented students to give readings of their work
in a professional setting. These up-and-coming writers share their
poetry, fiction, essays and playwriting in a supportive environment
which allows them to celebrate their efforts with other like-minded
creative youth. All young writers and musicians are welcome to participate.

us for more information.
Salons
Held in private homes throughout the year, these private, members-only events allow supporters to meet local and national writers and artists in an intimate setting for conversation, readings and panel discussions. Located in Lakewood and North Dallas.
